Clovis

I don't know him that well. Actually, after having heard a lot of talk about him, Flavia Corpas took me to meet him. He works at Ateliê Gaia, located inside the Bispo do Rosário Museum and administered and cared for by the institution. He has created for himself a studio inside of the one that welcomes all the artists who spend their days at work there. He's private, eccentric, one of a kind. The materials accumulate, finished work together with unfinished work, canvases, paint... Not the talkative type, Clovis greeted us with a smile. As soon as he saw we were interested in art, and in his art specifically, he started opening up little by little.
This simple man, a drifter born in rural São Paulo state, is an artist with a substantial resume. He has participated in the following group exhibitions: Ao rés-do-chão [“At ground-level”], Livre Galeria, Rio de Janeiro, 2015; Ressuscita-me [“Resurrect me”], Bispo do Rosário Museum of Contemporary Art, Rio de Janeiro, 2013; Próxima parada [“Next stop”], Bispo do Rosário Museum of Contemporary Art, Rio de Janeiro, 2007; Cologne in Colônia, Bispo do Rosário Museum of Contemporary Art, Rio de Janeiro, 2006; O que é normal? [“What is normal?”], ECCO – Contemporary Cultural Space, Brasília, 2006; Puzzlepólis II, the 26th São Paulo Biennial, 2004 (with visual artist Livia Flores); Matéria prima [“Raw material”], New Museum of Curitiba, Curitiba, 2002; Puzzlepólis, Sergio Porto Cultural Space, Rio de Janeiro 2002.
Clóvis has been compared to his contemporary Bispo do Rosário because he makes his works of art with recycled material, grouping them in a manner that's often obsessive. I believe that talent is the characteristic that links them.
I'm excited and I hope that you will be too.
