16/04/2013 | Sampa Online | 13 April 2013 - Zé do Chalé

Zé do Chalé – Sculptures. The exhibition shows 25 sculptures made of wood, or trophies, as the sergipano artist himself calls them, and represents a panorama of his production, largely comprising miniatures and fronts of churches and chapels, with symbols such as crosses, stars, the sun, the moon, birds and hearts, etc. Zé was a self-learner and started to do sculptures at the age of 89, when he retired from his job as a civil construction worker, but was still healthy and lucid. Discovered by chance, by photographer Celso Brandão, Zé then sculpted until he died in 2008, at the age of 105, leaving a small but significant collection of sculptures, all of these being the fruit of the imagination of a house builder who surpassed the limits of real dwellings to create dream buildings or “trophies”. Curatorship of Cauê Alves. Opening 16 April (Tuesday), runs until 30 May. Mondays to Fridays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Estação Art Gallery, Rua Ferreira de Araújo, 625 (Pinheiros) Telephone 0xx11 3813-7253. Admittance free.
