Biography

Neves Torres
(born 1932, in Conselheiro Pena – MG)

He lived his early years in small towns and hamlets in the Minas Gerais countryside: Conselheiro Pena, Mantena, and also lived in rural areas. In 1949 he relocated to Mutum – MG. He worked as a mechanic and as a driver until he bought a small farm. At the farm, he was a farm hand, planted coffee, and engaged in subsistence farming. In 1963, he became a widower and left the farm, living with his children in Mutum, where he started working as a tractor driver again. He worked on farms in the region for several years, until he decide to move to Vitória, in the state of Espírito Santo. In Vitória he worked with metal for a time and then returned to his original trade as a tractor driver, staying in the profession until he retired. After retirement, he looked for a new activity to keep himself busy. In a group of friends, some people would paint on fabric. He gave it a try, and painted some plate cloths. One day he mentioned to his son that he would like to paint pictures on canvas. His son set out to teach him and, after painting two pictures with his son, started to paint on his own in 2007. Since the outset, he showed a highly personal style of painting. In 2008, he sent his works to the Naif Biennial Exhibition in Piracicaba and then, on his first participation, he was one of the selected artists, having had his work included in the catalogue of the Biennial Exhibition. Two years later, in 2010, he once again participated in the Naif Biennial and won the acquisition prize.
