Biography

Francisco Graciano
(born in Juazeiro do Norte CE, in 1965).

Brejo Santo, in the Brazilian state of Ceará, is a small town close to Juazeiro do Norte, which is the current abode of the artist Francisco Graciano, also known as Mozinho dos Bonecos, and son of artist Manuel Graciano Cardoso. It is in the calm of his solitary silence, with his dogs as the only companions, on the farm where he lives, that he gives wings to his imagination, seeking in the animals the shapes inscribed on wood that is transformed into sculptures. Now he makes a living from his art, but his path has not been easy so far. His father felt that sending his children to school was “a waste of time” and would say that “no-one eats study”. Manuel Graciano became a famous sculptor and Francisco, even though he started along the same trail of his father, soon found his own language, that of an author. Apart from sculpture in wood, he takes to the screen the very same themes of animals and the Brazilian arid backlands (sertão).
